A bit (binary digit) is the atom of the digital world: a single 0-or-1. Alone it can only answer one yes/no question. Lined up, bits can describe anything — 8 bits make a byte, millions of bytes make your photos.

Every measure you've met — megabits of internet speed, gigabytes of storage — is just counting these atoms in bulk.
